A simpler way to access aged care
We're making it easier for older people to get assessed for aged care services as their needs change.
As of 9 December, the Single Assessment System has brought together the different assessment programs to simplify how you access government-funded aged care.
The new Single Assessment System will:
- be easier to navigate
- ensure you only have to tell your story once
- adapt to your changing needs, without having to change assessment provider
- ensure access to assessments in regional, rural and remote areas
- reduce wait times.
For older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, we will roll out First Nations assessment organisations from 1 July 2025 to provide culturally safe support.
What is changing?
Previously, there were different assessment pathways. As a result, assessments were not consistent and older people often moved between assessment organisations as their needs change.
The new system provides a single assessment pathway to enter and progress through aged care.
All organisations conducting aged care needs assessments are now able to do both:
- home support assessments for the Commonwealth Home Support Programme
- comprehensive assessments for the Home Care Packages Program, flexible aged care programs, residential respite and entry into residential aged care.
What do I need to know?
The way you apply for an assessment has not changed. Your assessment can still be done in person, at home, or in hospital if required.
There are no changes to eligibility requirements or referrals to urgent services. If you have already contacted My Aged Care to set up an assessment, your appointment will still go ahead.
Your next reassessment or Support Plan Review may be with a different assessment organisation, however you will then keep the same organisation for all future reassessments.
Read our fact sheet for more information, or visit My Aged Care to find out how to apply for an assessment.
Let's change aged care, together
Every Australian should feel confident about accessing high quality and safe aged care, when and where they need it.
The changes mean Older people will have greater choice and control, services that respect and meet their needs, and support to stay independent as they age.
