Be aware of aged care scams
We are aware of scammers who are targeting older people and their families and stealing their money.
Here are a few tips on how to protect yourself from scams:
- Always check the person contacting you is legitimate before clicking on links, sharing personal details or transferring money.
- If you get a suspicious phone call, text or email from a person or business you don’t know, don’t respond until you check who they are. Find their contact details online yourself and call them to check if they are trying to contact you.
- Before you transfer money to anyone, call them to confirm you have the correct bank account details.
- If a situation ever feels wrong, you should stop the transaction or conversation. Contact your bank to confirm the transaction has been cancelled or ask someone you trust for help.
If you think you’ve been scammed, report it to local police and contact your bank immediately. You can also report the scam to ScamWatch and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
