National Dementia Action Plan released

We have a new action plan to improve the lives of people living with dementia and their carers.

The National Dementia Action Plan 2024-2034 will help increase dementia awareness, reduce the risk of dementia and improve support for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

The plan includes 8 important actions:

  • Promote equity and human rights
  • Tackle stereotypes, improve awareness and promote inclusivity
  • Help people understand how to minimise risk and delay the onset and progression of dementia
  • Improve diagnosis care and support
  • Improve treatment and support
  • Better support for carers
  • Train the workforce to provide better care and support
  • Improve data collection, research and innovation.

Over 411,000 Australians live with dementia and around 1.6 million people care for them. Many people are being diagnosed with dementia at a younger age, including people under 50.

We want to reduce these numbers and improve the quality of life for people living with dementia.
