What we heard in the Residents' Experience Survey

The experiences of older people living in aged care homes give important insights into the quality of services they receive.

The Residents' Experience Survey is an opportunity for people living in aged care homes to tell us about their experience and provide feedback.

We know residents highly value having a say on the care they receive at their aged care home, that is why we have an independent survey team to conduct this survey annually.

The results help us measure satisfaction over time and make sure homes continually improve their services.

It helps providers understand what residents enjoy about their homes and what improvements can be made. The feedback is also used to calculate the Residents' Experience Star Rating for each home.

In 2022 and 2023, almost 75,000 people participated in this survey to share their experience living in aged care homes.

We saw some real improvements between 2022 and 2023. In the 2023 survey, 85% of residents said they would recommend their home to someone they know.

Residents nominated safety, respect, and kindness as the most positive aspects of their experience. Autonomy, or the extent to which they are empowered to live independently, showed the most improvement.

The 2024 survey is already in progress and will be completed by October 2024.
