Voluntary Monthly Care Statements start soon

An older man and a middle-aged woman sit at a table outside. The woman is leaning towards the man, appearing to assist him with something he is holding.

From 1 October 2024, we are encouraging aged care homes to offer residents a Monthly Care Statement.

Monthly Care Statements are an easy-to-read summary of the care people living in aged care receive. They can be shared with loved ones and can help guide conversations about care needs.

Monthly Care Statements will provide:

  • an overview of wellbeing activities, nutrition and weight, medication changes and appointments
  • confirmation that your requests and feedback have been acted on
  • visibility of your provider's care assessments and planning results.

If applicable, they will also cover mobility, falls, wound management and summaries of information, such as diagnoses.

We developed the Monthly Care Statements after consulting with older people and their representatives, residential aged care providers and advocates.

Aged care residents told us that they:

  • liked that Monthly Care Statements helped keep track of their care
  • felt Monthly Care Statements were a useful tool to plan for future care
  • saw benefit in sharing Monthly Care Statements with family members to increase clear communication about their care.

We will publish guides soon. Find out more about Monthly Care Statements and ask your aged care home about them.
